Psyllium: is a fiber dietary supplement used mainly to relieve constipation. This dietary fiber is derived from Plantago ovata seed husk. The fiber does not have any nutritive importance but is a good source of fiber. Every 100 grams of the supplement gives 71 grams of soluble fiber.
The psyllium fiber increases intestinal bulkiness hence helps to eliminate constipation. It also promotes weight loss since it suppresses appetite. It also boosts the rate of absorption. The supplement is known to prevent colon cancer, help in the treatment of diverticulosis and IBS and helps to lower cholesterol levels.
Take one to 2 psyllium pills daily usually with meals. One should take it with lots of liquid, at least an 8 ounce glass of liquid. Taking the supplement with little liquid can cause blockage or choking. It can also result in swelling of the throat.
The supplements daily value has not been estimated. The supplement contains carbohydrates, fiber and stearic acid. Itfs, however, free of sugars, salt, yeast, corn, soy, milk and preservatives.
