Iodine is an important substance in the body as it helps prevent illnesses that affect the thyroid gland. Iodine works by promoting the production of thyroid hormones which the body uses to control the functions of the thyroid gland. When your body does not receive enough iodine, you may be prone to the condition known as hypothyroidism.
Iodine supplements are available in tablet form, each of which contains 150 mg of iodine. The 100 percent supplement contains other substances such as cellulose, vegetable stearic acid and magnesium stearate as well as croscarmellose.
Iodine supplements do not contain any additives such as yeast, gluten, starch or even artificial preservatives and color. Iodine should be taken as a dietary supplement. This means that one tablet with your meals every so often. You should consult a doctor to know how often you should take the tablets, but it should be a few times a week.
Serious side effects are rare. However a large overdose may cause some burning sensation in the mouth, stomach and throat. Sometimes, this can be accompanied by fever, nausea which may lead to vomiting, diarrhea. In some cases, an overdose can lead to a weak pulse or a coma.
