The Horse chestnut was first discovered in the regions of Asia and northern Greece. Today, it is cultivated in different parts of the globe especially in Europe and North America.
Almost all the parts of this plant have been useful medically and they include the bark, seeds and leaves. However, currently only the seeds have been discovered as the best source of medicinal purpose.
The horse chestnut seeds are the most commonly used plant parts for making medicinal remedies as well as preparations for herbs.
The chemical component present in the seeds known as the aescin has been proved to do well in improving blood circulations as tested in different clinics. It does this by increasing the tone of the veins, enabling blood to flow without any restrictions. The ability of this component to promote blood circulation has given the chestnut plant a very big name.
It is also believed that the aescin extract may contain inflammatory effects useful in reduction of edema as type of swelling that is caused by excess fluid due to injuries. Aescin has also been popularly used in Europe to treat skin ulcers and skin cancer but this has not yet been proven on the effectiveness. The leaves have also been used to relieve coughs.
