Cascara-Sagrada Bark: The Chinook Indians, discovering this extract from the Cascara Buckthorn Plant, called it Chittam or Chitticum.
It originated from Bristish Columbia and grows all the way into California and East into Montana.
This is the largest growing species of Buckthorn, becoming a small tree or a large bush that flowers and then produces berries.
It has been used medicinally first by the Native Americans then passed along to the Americans who came from the east and occupied Native American lands, as a laxitive. It purposes were found in the bark for about the last 1000 years.
To be tolerated by humans, the bark is dried for about 1 year, making it much milder to ingest. Results for bowel movements are generally 6-12 hours.
Adverse Side effects: Caution should be used if taking the herb for more than 1 week, to avoid vomiting and severe diarrhea.
